Saving Money with Meal Planning

Most people are looking for ways to save money around the home, and meal planning is the answer. I don’t know about you, but if I don’t have a meal planned out ahead of time, I’m more likely to want to order take out or go out to eat. With a busy household, full of working full time outside of the home, kids schooling, and kids after school activities. The last thing I want is to stress out about what to feed my family. When planing for these meals I look at keeping cost low, easy to make meals and making enough for leftovers for our lunch. So technically I’m planning our lunches and dinners. If I’m lucky, I’ll even make enough for 2 dinners and  lunch!

Crock-pot meals have saved me so much time. It usually takes me under 15 minutes to set up the crock pot in the morning. Then a few minutes to add the last ingredients right before dinner time. I’m able to stick to a better diet this way, no more food cravings that ruin my diet goals.

If your able to plan meals around what you have or items that are on sale, you can feed a family of 5 for a few dollars. For example: I can buy 6 chicken breast for around $9, which I would use 2 breast for each meal. 3lb bag of onions are $0.97 at our local Winco, so I grabbed 2 bags. Each bag has about 8 onions, costing $0.12 each. Green Cabbage cost $0.79/lb so 1 cabbage would cost me about $1.20, which I only use half for each meal. I buy baby carrots for a 3lb bag for $2.99, which I use 1/6th for each meal. I’m sure it would be cheaper if I bought regular carrots, but we use baby carrots for dinner and lunches. I use chicken bouillon to make my soup mix, so its hard to figure out the price since I only use 2 spoon full of this ingredient. I also add garlic, Italian Seasoning, salt and pepper. Which is hard to figure out the price per meal. Sometimes I add 2 small Zucchini to the meal which cost me around $0.97 per meal.

  • Chicken: $3
  • Onion: $0.12
  • Cabbage: $0.60
  • Carrots: $0.50
  • Zucchini: $0.97

Grand Total: $5.19 for a meal that can feed 3 adults, 2 kids for dinner. Plus have enough to feed 2 adults for lunch the next day!
